CareersNursing vs Occupational Therapy in the UK: an honest comparison
Two of our strongest UK health pathways are pre-registration nursing and pre-registration MSc Occupational Therapy. They’re often confused. Here’s an honest comparison.
Registration and regulator
Nursing leads to registration with the NMC; occupational therapy to registration with the HCPC. Both are recognised, protected professions with structured routes into employment.
Entry
Pre-registration nursing usually expects a related background. Pre-registration MSc Occupational Therapy is open to applicants from any first degree — which makes OT a genuine option for career-changers who couldn’t enter nursing directly.
Workload and nature of the work
Nursing is shift-based, physically demanding and clinical. OT is rehabilitation-focused — helping people regain independence — and many find it less physically intense, though it is intellectually demanding and caseload-heavy. Neither is “easier”; they’re different.
Demand and the visa angle
Both are in demand. Eligible health roles have lower Skilled Worker thresholds (from around £25,000), so both can route toward sponsorship with a qualifying job offer. We never call sponsorship guaranteed — but the structural route is real for both.
How to choose
If you have a nursing background and want the widest pool of roles, nursing. If you’re changing fields and want a high-demand profession open to any first degree, OT deserves a serious look. We’ll talk through your actual situation rather than push the more profitable placement.
